Bradford J. Shingleton, MD Becomes American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery President

Fairfax, VA - Bradford J. Shingleton, MD, of Boston, Massachusetts assumed the duties of president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) today in ceremonies at the Society's annual Symposium and Congress in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Shingleton is a glaucoma and cataract specialist with Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. He is also a surgeon in ophthalmology at the Boston Eye Surgery & Laser Center and the Cape Cod Eye Surgery & Laser Center and maintains privileges at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

The need for Medicare reform highlighted Dr. Shingleton's remarks during the opening session of the ASCRS annual meeting.

"The formula's used to calculate doctors' reimbursements under Medicare are a time bomb," Shingleton said. "There has been a steady ratcheting down of reimbursements for doctors' services. These reductions in the face of rising costs and inflation threaten to make it impossible for many physicians to continue providing services to Medicare patients," he added.

"We have a Medicare system that is failing: we must be proponents of solutions, and we need to be bold in presenting them. One solution may be to have our payor system provide a high-quality, basic level of care and services to all patients, with an expanded patient-shared payment responsibility for special elective services," Shingleton said.

Dr. Shingleton graduated from Princeton University in 1973, and the University of Michigan Medical School in 1977. He completed his residency and fellowship in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1982.

Shingleton has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers and studies, as well as numerous books, book chapters, reports and monographs. He has served as a reviewer for major medical journals including American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Ophthalmic Surgery and Lasers, Survey of Ophthalmology, and the Journal of Glaucoma. He serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Eye Trauma and Ocular Surgery News.

Among his academic appointments, he serves as an Associate Clinical Professor in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, and a Clinical Instructor in Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Shingleton, an avid sports enthusiast, serves as team ophthalmologist to the Boston Bruins, the New England Patriots, the New England Revolution, and the Boston Red Sox.

Among Dr. Shingleton's honors are being designated as one of the Best Doctors in America (chosen by peers), Best of Boston, and a Life Member of the National Registry of Who's Who. He is the recipient of a Senior Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and he was selected as one of America's Top Ophthalmologists by Consumers Research of America.
