Biography
I
was born in Fall River, Massachusetts and raised in the small southeastern Massachusetts
town of Swansea. As a boy I developed a strong interest in athletics,
outdoor sports, and chemistry, and from these early roots developed my lifelong
love affair with fishing, track and field, science and mathematics.
Upon
graduation from high school, I left southeastern Massachusetts for southeastern
Connecticut and the green pastures of Fairfield University. During my stay at
Fairfield, I captained both the track and cross country teams learning how to
maintain a high level training program in combination with an equally high level
academic program. I survived these rigors to graduate with a BA degree in 1971.
My
love of athletics and a summer camp counselors job led to my next adventure,
coaching swimming at the West End House Boy’s Club in Allston, Massachusetts.
During my seven wonderful years at this legendary Boston organization I met
my wife Alison, learned the joy of using science to help others,
and decided to make optometry my life’s work. I entered The New England
College of Optometry in 1978, and graduated with a Doctor
of Optometry degree in 1982. At graduation, the Faculty of the college honored
me with The New England College of Optometry’s Clinic Award.
Since
graduation from The New England College I have had the opportunity to
practice with many fine Doctors both in optometry and ophthalmology.
I have been greatly appreciative of all the lessons that they have taught, and
all the experiences that they have shared. I have also been thankful for the
thousands of patients, kind and courageous, and the lessons that
they have taught, the experiences that they have shared, and the patience
and good humor they have extended.
